The Krone Ice Protect system prevents hazards
in road traffic caused by snow, water, and ice
Werlte, in November 2009 – Every truck driver knows the problem: Anybody who has parked his vehicle for a long period in cold temperatures must have experienced ice plate formation on the curtain roof through snowfall or rain. It is very rare to find suitable aids available in the parking area which a driver can use to remove the ice plates before departing. Krone offers a practical solution for this problem: the KRONE Ice Protect system.
The semi-automatic Ice Protect system can be activated by the driver via an operating panel located at the vehicle's front wall. The curtain roof is lifted by approx. 20 cm in the vehicle centre (from the front to the rear) by a lifting device which fills an air bag and makes the roof tarp take the shape of a typical ridge roof. By lifting the roof tarp it is impossible for snow or rain to accumulate on the parked vehicle, thus preventing the formation of ice plates, which might later become dangerous missiles during driving. The tarp is automatically lowered again once the vehicle is started.
Michael Grummel, proprietor of Grummel Transporte in Werlte, is impressed with the KRONE Ice Protect system: "The system at any time ensures that no ice or water bags can form on the vehicle roof. My drivers no longer need to climb onto the roof in order to remove ice or snow with a long pusher before their departure. The system increases road traffic safety, relieves the driver, and saves time and money", Grummel says.
The KRONE Ice Protect system is available for all KRONE curtain semitrailers and naturally can be retrofitted. In addition, some insurance companies grant a reduction of insurance premiums when the vehicle is equipped with the innovative Ice Protect system. The system complies with the safety regulations of the StVZO (German Road Traffic Licensing Regulation), in particular with §23 item 1; this has been confirmed by DEKRA (a German vehicle testing organisation).
